Cool true story about Eugenie Clark, a woman scientist who pursued her passion to study zoology and marine biology。 I love the extra facts included at the end of the story。 Will use for Women’s History Month if I can’t find another application。Story: 4Illustrations: 4Read-aloud: 4

It was astounding to learn that Eugenie Clark, an American woman of Japanese descent, earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Zoology between 1942-46! The book addressed the sexism she faced but left out any mention of racism which seems…odd。 I think editing out that part of her story weakens it and makes it less relatable。

Beautifully illustrated true story about Eugenie Clark, who became a world-famous marine biologist at a time when women were discouraged from even going to college。 The story starts with Eugenie's first visit to an aquarium and her growing love of sharks。 We see her dedication to school, her vivid imagination, and her fearlessness when conducting research underwater with sharks。 We also learn about her discoveries and experiments。 The book is very much geared to young readers, but the story is i Beautifully illustrated true story about Eugenie Clark, who became a world-famous marine biologist at a time when women were discouraged from even going to college。 The story starts with Eugenie's first visit to an aquarium and her growing love of sharks。 We see her dedication to school, her vivid imagination, and her fearlessness when conducting research underwater with sharks。 We also learn about her discoveries and experiments。 The book is very much geared to young readers, but the story is inspiring and not babyish。The final pages include facts about sharks, a time line of Eugenie's life, and sources for learning more。The illustrations use a seawater palette with yellow/orange accents for the non-marine scenes。 The background people are diverse。 The sharks and other sea creatures are identifiable and have pleasing and varying expressions。Thanks to the publisher for the review copy。 。。。more

Eugenie Clark is my new favorite inspirational person! Born in 1922, Eugenie had a fascination with marine life, especially sharks, from a young age, and worked past barriers and sexism to earn several advanced degrees in zoology。 She discovered several new species of marine life, wrote extensively, survived lung cancer, and conducted crucial research on sharks and other marine life。 She was a phenomenal scientist and person。

My daughter’s 5th birthday party theme was Shark Lady — so if that’s not a 5-star review for a children’s book, I don’t know what is! 🙃

I was pleasantly surprised by this book。 I had never heard of Eugenie Clark and her story。 This book was inspiring and informational。 It would be fun to read this out loud and then explore about and some of her other finding。 The text was simply but at time kind of poetic and the illustrations where amazing。 Every page was big and blue or colorful with a whole bunch of different fish, but my favorite page was definitely in the beginning when Eugenie is swimming in her mind at the aquarium。 I cou I was pleasantly surprised by this book。 I had never heard of Eugenie Clark and her story。 This book was inspiring and informational。 It would be fun to read this out loud and then explore about and some of her other finding。 The text was simply but at time kind of poetic and the illustrations where amazing。 Every page was big and blue or colorful with a whole bunch of different fish, but my favorite page was definitely in the beginning when Eugenie is swimming in her mind at the aquarium。 I could not recommend this book enough。 A great example of non-fiction and bibliography! 。。。more

Boring and predictable。 The language is not up to date。 The scientist was so brilliant that she experimented on sharks in captivity in attempt to prove they were as smart as dogs。 We deserve better than this。
